The Tech Academy
The Tech Academy is a trade school headquartered in Portland, Oregon that offers full-time and part-time bootcamps online and in-person at their Portland campus. The Tech Academy offers part-time and full-time bootcamps in computer programming, website development, cybersecurity, game development, mobile development, data science, front-end development, tech marketing, and tech sales. The immersive experience aims to create well-rounded technology professionals, and also gives students the option to take the course at their own pace. There are also no set starts dates or rigid scheduling. Students can enroll at any time, study from home, and choose whatever study schedule they would like.
The Tech Academy’s bootcamps cover topics including computer science fundamentals, programming basics, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, SQL, C#, Python, Bootstrap, jQuery, React.js, project management, Agile, Scrum, MVC, version control, Java, and more. Each bootcamp also includes a Live Project, where students gain real-life experience to add to their resume as well as job placement assistance.
None of The Tech Academy's bootcamps require any tech background or experience. To apply, applicants need to take an IQ test with logic-based questions (to ensure applicants can read, write and perform basic math), followed by an admissions interview.
The final part of every The Tech Academy bootcamp is the Job Placement Course which covers interviewing skills, resume writing, where to find tech jobs, and gives students access to job placement staff who assist students in landing technical positions.

Definitely Worth It
My overall experience with The Tech Academy was wonderful. I went in knowing a lot about computers but nothing about software development. The instructors are awesome and super nice, they are there to answer your questions no matter how dumb you may feel when asking them. It is a short course that is designed perfectly, and I in no way am saying it isn't, but I would have liked to spend more time on languages like JavaScript. (I am doing lots of self-learning on my off time - python, JavaScript, AWS certification, etc..) They have a monster course on C# (the main one) which is ultimately how I got my job as well, so obviously it all works out in the end!
Overall I would say that this is ENTIRELY worth it. Lots of companies will give you a cold shoulder because you don't have a Bachelors Degree in Computer Sciences or Computer Engineering or whatever - but don't let this deter you! Keep applying and keep making good impressions, it will pay off in the end!

I totally understand what you mentioned about JavaScript, and indeed there are entire bootcamps dedicated solely to JS, because you're right: it's extremely pertinent. I'm positive you know enough about it now to be able to learn more on the job as you're getting more experience, which is exactly what we go for with our graduates. The self-paced aspect is really what caught my eye when I was researching bootcamps. It allowed me to spend extra time on parts that I thought I needed it, and allowed me to speed through parts I picked up quickly. It made it so I never felt over or underwhelmed. You get out of the program what you put in.
Overall I'm very happy with my decision to attend the The Tech Academy and I can't wait to continue my career in software.

In the job search process, Aaron is an incredible resource who does all he can to keep you motivated and get you employed. The total tuition rate when I started was around $8,000, which is less than half of the total cost for most other bootcamps.
My only advice would be to update some of the material, specifically the C# section, which is mostly taught on software that is no longer available (Visual Studio 2013 Express). Also, I think the option for external internships at the end of the coursework would help in finding a job and add to real world experience. Regardless, the school does exactly what it sets out to do exceptionally well - teach web and software development fundamentals and help you change careers. All at an unbeatable cost.

ALWAYS Recommend to Anyone Considering a Career Change

The curriculum does give you a very base level knowledge of each language, but if you want to work in tech, you have to continue your education no matter what. I had trouble in my job search only because I lived in such a saturated tech city; however, with the support of the job placement coordinators, I found opportunities with jobs looking for remote workers and snagged interviews. I now work with a company that liked me so much, they created a position for me that can build on my skills that I learned at the school and are also open to my feedback and ideas for improvements that I've never experienced before.

I chose the Tech Academy for the more comprehensive approach to software development, specifically the idea that a broader understanding of computer science would provide a better foundation for a career in software development. I figured a wider understanding would allow me to continue to learn different programming languages as technology continues to change.
Also, the Tech Academy was more affordable than alternatives and it has a rolling start date so I could start when I wanted to instead of having to wait until the next course began. The program was flexible and individual so I was able to complete the work at my own pace and on my own schedule, while they provided a work space and instructors who could provide assistance when I needed it. I was also provided with a laptop to use during the course.
My learning style is more solitary, so I found the videos and exercises to be very good. However, I also really enjoyed and learned from the two week group project at the end of the course. We worked on a real application for a real business. In this case an inventory system for a restaurant. It was a great opportunity to apply what we learned and to work as a team.
I would recommend the Tech Academy to anyone looking to become a software developer, but I would suggest being in the Portland area so you can be on site as much as possible. Direct interaction with the instructors and other students makes getting past any roadblocks much smoother. I also found it motivational to go to the study area to work.

I am still in the middle of working through this boot camp, but I would like to express that thus far it has been a great experience!
I began this boot camp because I felt that I needed a change in career, the current job I was in was good but it wasn't really getting me where I needed to go financially, I really wanted something that gave opportunity to excel in a field where I could really grow my professional career into something great. Going to school for many years to get a degree seemed like somewhat of an impossibilty with the logistics involved in having 3 daughters in combination with school, so the fact that the Tech Academy would be an opportunity to fast track to a specialized career path was ideal.
I was a little hesitant at first going into it because it was essentialy something very different then anything I had done before and a financial risk. After discussing the program with the School, I liked what I heard about what it entailed and how it was run. On the onset of going through the courses nearer to the start I was feeling unsure if I had made the right decision, maybe I didn't have enough passion for this or maybe I just wouldn't be able to figure it out well enough to apply it within a job. As I have progressed I've begun to feel more and more confident in my abilites and have become interested in the subject of what can be done in coding and how one goes about it. What's amazing is that this school has actually blown away my worries about if I can code or not, I know I can and I'm not even finished, (halfway through or so.)
Some things that really make it a great experience:
- Practical applications all throughout, code challenges, essays, multichoice tests.
- Flexible full or part time scheduling at any time no enrollment cutoff dates.
- Hands on instructor help when needed, remote or local(they are very friendly, patient and willing.)
- Helpful in all ways needed to start your career: they help with everything from computer course supplies needed, resumes, job placement, interview training.
- Course is broken down in such a way as to gradiently give you all the knowledge you will need bit by bit from simple to complex.
- All along things are setup to give you hands on experience at searching for answers on your own and breaking apart your code to find solutions and if you hit the wall to many times the instructors are more then willing to help guide you, (if you ask for help) without doing it for you.
This is a great place for anyone who wants to jump into a career in programming!

The staff and instructors have all been amazing. Everyone is friendly, professional, and most of all, helpful.
While there are many online resources for learning development, I strongly encourage anyone interested in bringing their skills up to a professional level to take advantage of the program. Being in the school has introduced me to the tech community here in Portland, a resource I was sorely lacking prior to my enrollment, as well as given me a firm uderstanding of what to expect as a developer.
Upon completion of the program, the job placement assistance has been amazing. Help with crafting a resume and cover letter, building a network, interview practice, and helpful insight into landing that perfect position have been invaluable. They even hired me on as an instructor while I continue my career search!

I attended the Tech Academy because I wanted to make a career change. I chose the Tech Academy because I needed to keep working at my old job while studying for a new one. Having the option to go part-time after work and on weekends was a huge plus for me! There were instructors available when I needed them and I could move through the curriculum at my own pace.
