UTS Bootcamps by Institute of Data

I recently completed the 24-week part-time Software Engineering program with the Institute of Data. It was a challenging yet rewarding experience that gave me a good foundation in coding and helped me take the first steps toward transitioning into a new career.
I can’t speak highly enough of the instructors, Adam Herbert and Gareth Wootton are exceptional teachers. Their support, patience, and encouragement kept me motivated throughout the course. They not only helped me tackle complex topics but also inspired me to push myself creatively and stay engaged through the highs and lows of learning something completely new.
While the instructors were outstanding, I found some aspects of the curriculum a bit difficult to navigate. Learning to code is naturally challenging, and I think the modules could benefit from being more hands-on, with more time built in to reinforce and practise what we learned. That said, I understand there’s only so much you can fit into a 24-week part-time program. The course covers foundational knowledge in software engineering, including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, React, and backend best practices. By the end, I felt fairly confident in my understanding of these areas, and thanks to the guidance of the instructors, I also know how to continue building on that knowledge.
The job outcomes team, especially Kate, has been incredibly supportive and offers a wealth of industry insights. That said, it’s worth managing your expectations when it comes to transitioning into the field. While the job support is a key part of the course offering, the job market is very competitive, and I’m still in the process of securing a full-time role.
Overall, I’m proud of what I achieved and grateful to have gained a valuable new skill. This course is a good introduction to the world of software engineering, and the confidence I gained came largely from the dedication and support of the teaching staff. Just be mindful that the transition into a tech role after the course may take time and quite a bit of persistence. Read less
