University of Birmingham Boot Camps

I am still studying for Security+ now because the course covers very little of it.  I bought a textbook after the course and read it twice I learned much more in one chapter than 7k of terrible tuition. The tutor frequently got lost during simple demos and frequently the students would help him, he showed he had not prepared for the classes they accidentally gave us access to the teacher walk through guide, it appeared like he was just reading it to the class, he had another job and this was his side gig, he stated you can get a job in cyber that asks for 2-3 years experience with this course that is completely false you might get a help desk job if you are lucky, UOB offers £50 amazon vouchers for student reviews so be careful with the ones you read, My advice spend £30 on the textbook and 300 - 400 for Comptia training with exam included and save 6500 plus on this course it will basically waste your time if you want practical skills there’s HTB and others, you will not come out ready to start in a SOC role and you will not even be able to perform ethical hacking as the things they show only work on their own vulnerable machines and real hackers don’t use the tools they teach because they are basic and easy to detect, plus now you are on the hook for 7k and the after course support doesn’t even exist the guy who was supposed to help me didn’t know I was entitled to a voucher for the Security+ exam didn’t know I was entitled to my certificate of completion that he said was coming 2 months ago but never appeared, I would ask a question about these things and after being ignored for weeks have to ask again, I even had to ask them to grade my final assignment so I could graduate, clearly the whole thing is a bit of a scam take the advice above and totally avoid this bootcamp and by the way many of my colleagues have returned to their old fields and have given up completely on cyber they chat to me all the time because the debt collection agency keeps emailing them and they feel robbed. My experience was terrible. The Student Success manager we had at the beginning who was Enrique was fairly okay. But he had left and our new Success manager "T" was not helpful at all. She would never reply to your queries or pleas for help. And when she did, they were half answers. The pace of the course was terrifyingly fast and the support was limited. The career progression was useless as they did not provide any real way to access potential job opportunities. All in all I would say you are better of going to university or studying independently. I enjoyed taking part in the Data Analytics Bootcamp. I did it part-time online so I would have time for the information to sink in, but I still found it quite intense! However, I found that if you focus on completing the assignments every week, that really helps you learn and solidify concepts.

Before joining the BootCamp, I was not aware of all the available help! I was very impressed with the 24-hour support with assignments/general questions. In addition to this, we had the option of booking a personal tutor for 50 minutes every week. This extra support was amazing and it makes the program worth it because I never felt alone in my studies. If I was stuck on something, I tried as much as I could to resolve it myself through my own research, but when that wasn't enough, my tutor was ALWAYS incredibly helpful. 

The program moves quite fast & at times it felt like there wasn't enough time to absorb all the info/master it. I really had to focus on learning enough so that I could complete the projects and assignments. My feedback to the course coordinators would be to remove the front-end web development section from this Bootcamp (especially the Javascript) and give more time instead to mastering Python, SQL and ESPECIALLY Data Science. 

Overall, I am very glad I participated in this Bootcamp and now feel I have a solid foundation in data analytics.  Read less

I enrolled in the Boot Camp because I always wanted to learn more about web development. Furthermore, as I was attending university at the same time, the part-time Boot Camp was perfect for me.

I recently graduated the Full Stack Web Development course at University of Birmingham, UK, aiming in changing my career to web development.

The course is very dense and thorough, with rigorous syllabus and good methodology. 

We started with basic HTML and CSS and moved on to JS learning through practical examples and a lot of algorithms that became gradually more complex throughout the course. The algorithms are important because you build skills and learn how to solve problems in coding. 

Later on, we learned backend NodeJS and data bases and build interesting full stack apps on a weekly basis. The coursework becomes gradually more and more demanding, helping in building the skills every developer should have. 

In the later part of the course we delved into ReactJS and built more complex, full MERN applications that became more and more polished as the time passed by. 

The course is very hands on, very practical and working both individually and in teams provide plenty of good exercise and lots of opportunities to learn and have a better grasp on what you like and what you struggle at. 

The teaching staff are very, very good professionals with lots of experience and good communication skills. They provided plenty practical examples, live coding and a lot of assistance for all the students. We received a lot of online resource and documentation as we learned new concepts and corroborated with coursework, team projects, class activities, algorithms, coding in pairs with classmates and the general good learning environment provided a very good experience overall. 

I do consider the syllabus to be very useful, rigurous and in line with industry demand. That helps in building solid, marketable skills for accessing a career in web development. It is a very good foundation for future learning and skills sharpening and provides a good route for someone either wishing to change careers or consolidating their skills after graduating computer science degree.  Read less
