My experience at Helio was excellent. I took the immersive full-stack course, having absolutely no experience with coding or programming, and in under four months, I am well on my way to becoming a legitimate junior web developer. My classmates...

    Admissions

    Jordan,

Your feedback is appreciated. However, the entire story has not been told and much of what your review purports to be true is very inaccurate. In an effort to be transparent and fair, the following bullet points will directly address your comments:

    • We do not have an HR department; it is assumed that by "HR" you mean Career Services.
    • Amy is the Career Services manager. She is fair and direct but has not been referred to as "mean" by anyone else who's taken a course from Helio. Contrary to the claims made in your review, documentation shows that communication between you and Amy was at all times professional, courteous, and considerate on her part.
    • Career Services offers three incredibly valuable workshops, which are a part of the course. Attending and completing these workshops is a requirement to be considered a graduate from Helio Training. You attended none of these in person and did not follow through on the assignments.
    • Career Services worked with you numerous times on your resume, which was both unprofessional and not up to par with tech industry expectations. Documentation shows you failed to make suggested edits despite several attempts to aid you in this process.
    • You failed to complete any of the Career Services assignments, each of which is designed to help students achieve success in finding a job. These missed assignments include developing/strengthening your online profile--primarily LinkedIn and Slack, completing suggested edits on resumes, mock interviews with industry professionals, attending relevant meet-ups, and providing a report on the minimum required amount of submitted job applications per week.
    • In reference to the Tuition Reimbursement Guarantee (TRG): You signed a document that outlined the required steps that you, as a student, must complete in order to qualify for the TRG. Many of these requirements were outlined previously, namely working with Career Services on your resume, attending all workshops, applying to a minimum number of jobs per week and submitting a tracking summary, participating in various exercises designed to prepare students for interviews and employment in the industry. You failed to do these things and therefore did not qualify for the TRG.
    • You assert that you knew "a few people" who did "several if not a dozen interviews" but did not get job offers. Nowhere in our process or communication do we promise a set number of interviews before guaranteeing employment. We do, however, communicate to each student multiple times over their respective course(s) that they may need to apply and interview many times before receiving an offer. This process is affected by many variables--the student's previous work history, strength of resume, relevant experience, Certification of Proficiency, preparation for interviews and more. Without completing the steps and working with Career Services in earnest, the number of submitted applications and interviews is likely to greatly exceed the number of applications and interviews one would participate in were they to follow the path laid out by Career Services. We have documentation to support this.
    • You assert that the job market is "washed out" and that making $60k a year is unrealistic. There are multiple job sites that successfully argue against your claim, showing that hundreds of jobs exist along the Wasatch Front at any given time, with thousands available across the country. Furthermore, our average graduate starts at approximately $60k a year; this information is documented and verified.
    • You state that Helio never checks up on students after completing a course; this is inaccurate. We publically state that students are welcome to retake or shadow a course for a year after completing their original course, and we have processes in place to assist students seeking Proficiency well after their course has ended. This is made aware to all students and many take advantage of these offerings, to their benefit.
    • You claim an article you read states there is one tech job per two graduates, but you neither cite the article nor expand upon the details. A quick google search can show evidence contrary to your claim. We also show that in 2019 over 80% of Helio graduates who completed a course in the same year have a job in the industry.

In addition to the information above, we have documentation showing that on several occasions you called into class from your car while traveling. Any chance at success will be slim if students are not present for class, are unable to participate fully in class, and/or do not complete the recommended and required tasks offered by Career Services and instructors. We have documentation that shows the vast majority of students who do these things end up graduating from Helio and successfully join the tech industry.

We understand that the outcome you received did not reflect the outcome you desired, but documentation shows that your claims are neither factual and do not appear to have been delivered in good faith. We welcome feedback and strive to improve when opportunities present themselves. If you would like to reach out to us or come by the campus and discuss what options we may have for you, please let us know.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback.  We are always open to receiving feedback from our students.  We wish your experience was different and are disheartened to hear otherwise.  We are still hopeful that we can help your transition into the development field. Our current locations are only inside of Utah and we are working to expand our network to whatever areas our students want to end up.  With Neumont College of Computer Science being our sister organization, we do have alumni in many areas of the country that can be a great networking source for our graduates.  We are dedicated and working hard expand our network.
One of our main intentions is to teach our students the basics of development and
also teach them how to learn on their own.  Web development is always changing and will continue to do so in the future.  Our hope is that our graduates gain some great skills but also know how to become self-sufficient and research then solve their own problems.  We have retake and shadowing policies in place and will allow our students to retake the same course or shadow the same course for up to a year after completion.
