MCOR Web Development Bootcamp Spring '17

I decided to enroll in Maricopa Corporate College's spring 2017 Web Development Bootcamp. My decision came after months of frustration trying to teach myself Ruby and Python and a general interest in learning a valuable set of skills. I have been around the tech./startup industry for years now and wanted to take the next step and become coding literate. I spent a great deal of time researching options. My first choice was a program in San Francisco, its appeal was that it didn't take up-front tuition, but rather would take 18% of your first year's salary. The prospect of moving to San Francisco for several months seemed pretty daunting and just wasn't going to fit with my life at the time.

My second choice was a program in San Diego and I actually enrolled in the program and was ready to move to San Diego for a couple months but a series of poorly communicated events on their end left me mad and I withdrew.

It was only happenstance that I received an email from Sumy Joy, the program manager for MCOR's Web Dev course. I had ended up on their newsletter and up until that moment, had ignored the emails. I attended their upcoming open house, met a couple of the instructors and was impressed with their resumes. When they told me the price I was sold. Compared with a program like Galvanize for example, it was 1/5 the cost.

The program itself was great, the class was quite small by the time many students dropped out a few weeks in, making it very easy to ask questions and engage with the faculty. The content was useful, although I think they may have spent too long on HTML and CSS for our particular cohort (thankfully we were all very quick learners).

Once we moved to Javascript it was much more challenging but still very informative. PHP and SQL were the third part of the class and they seemed to go everyone's head. This particular instructor seemed to possess loads of natural talent and acumen, however, conveying it to students perhaps leaves him with room for improvement.

All in all, this class is great, but don't expect to be babied, this class moves quickly and requires you to put a bit of effort in away from class (as I assume any bootcamp would) they give you the basics, and are there to answer your questions. The smaller class size is particularly appealing and the content is very relevant as all the instructors currently work in the industry during the day. As far as placement, I was offered an internship immediately upon completion of the course, and as far as I know, all who wanted one were offered the same from various companies.

You'll get out of this course what you're willing to get in, but these guys will give you more than a foundation for you to start a new career and for the price, it's unbeatable.

Web Development

This class gives you an introduction to coding and building a website. I've leraned and fill confident with HTML5 and CSS as well as javascript, wordpress and php. I have a background in graphic design so learning the ins and outs of a webpage and throwing in my design skills is pretty awesome!
