Sabio

Sabio has bad business practices. They get a bunch of people to join the program and then kick people out for anything they can. They take advantage of. the tax payer funded vet tec and gi bill. They take advantage of the benefits. They get as many people to sign up in the beginning and get paid by VET TEC. Around 140 people signed up and of those about 40 or less are still there on VET TEC. Initially they got paid 25% for these students. They find any other reason to kick you out and ask if you want to pay cash or use your gi bill. Sean Moran is the one doing this and Gregorio Rojas is the business owner telling him to do this. If you are a veteran who was affected by this contact me. Another student that was on campus said that the only people there are only on GI BILL. They also don't pro rate the gi bill they take all the 17 weeks if you used VET TEC. A lot of people quit their jobs to attend and move to CA and then kick you out.On top of that the videos which are called a "curriculum" are so bad. They are filled with errors and not even edited out. The videos are made with the least amount of effort. He calls out people for not knowing some of the material but Gregorio doesn't teach what we are supposed to learn. Alot of things reference Mozilla and W3 Schools. I will also be contacting those companies because he is taking money and using their resources as his curriculum. No where does is state that those are resources. They are their own separate module as a curriculum. This is tax payer money that is being purposely misused and on top of that these are veterans that are quitting their job and moving to try and change careers. In the end they get kicked out. I think there is public interest in this.

Veteran to Software Engineer to Entrepreneur

Attending Sabio has been one of the best career decisions I've made. I used to work in facility maintenance and after just 6 months, I jumped into a career as a software engineer working with one of the top military contracting firms in the U.S., nearly tripling my previous salary.Sabio curates their coursework that almost identically mimics the actual day to day of software engineer. This could come as a shock to some, as it isn't necessarily a completely hands on approach to teaching, as they slowly ween you off of lectures and teach you to self research and also utilize what they call the Q, a process to which you can speak one on one with an instructor to receive guidance. I almost found this annoying at first, but you learn that this is what the day in life of a software dev is, and that's utilizing every resource you have to solve problems given to you by an employer. I have spoken to a lot of different bootcamp grads all different schools and Sabio consistently comes up as a school that not only prepared the developers in getting a job, but outperforming their peers in the workplace as they have the experience to take care of problems that are given to them. They also stand out by selecting developers to work on an MVP for real entrepreneurs, increasing your confidence on working with a real development team. This helped greatly with the interview process, as you're given real life experience that you can speak on and show off.I used VETEC to pay for the course, but I've seen some reviews that state Sabio is harsh on VETTEC users, but I do not want those who use the benefit to be thrown off. The VA has strict guidelines that Sabio has to hold developer accountable to. I know this as I initially had an issue for an academic probation, but after speaking with the VA, I was explained of the strict rules that the bootcamps are held to. As long as you follow the curriculum and what is asked of you, you will have absolutely no problem utilizing any VA benefit with Sabio.

the worst decision of my life, Liliana and Gregorio take advantage of desperate people

At the end of my rope, I was desperate to turn my life around for the better and Sabio took advantage of that. Long story short, an issue came up between myself and Gregorio. I handled myself respectfully and genuinely wanted to resolve the issue. However, he acted very unprofessionally, made an assumption, and would not hear me out when I tried to kindly correct his assumption. So I got in touch with Liliana for further assistance. Maybe Gregorio was just having a bad day or something and I was hopeful that his wife, Liliana, would be able to assist with clarifying the miscommunication between me and Gregorio. Instead, she told me to file a complaint with BPPE and that I could continue with Sabio after the issue was all resolved. No problem, I get that there's a protocol to follow sometimes and I was willing to put in the work. Like I said, I was at the end of my rope. However, it got worse when I called Liliana to keep her updated on what was going on and was in need of paperwork from Sabio to defer the loan I took out - she responded to me, "you're not a student of ours anymore." There was no notice, no email or call, nothing to inform me I was being dropped from Sabio and no explanation for why I was dropped. Needless to say, this shocked me especially since Liliana and Gregorio make it seem like they care about you and will work with you as long as you were willing to put in the work too. But they don't. They are in it for the business, not the students as individuals. So now I literally have nothing, was hospitalized for suicidal ideation, and guarantee that I will do whatever I can to either get back into continuing the Sabio program or get my money back. I've already talked with a lawyer and it'll be a long process but I fully intend to take this as far as I need to in order to bring justice to this problem. Ultimately though, if things don't work out with either me getting my money back or being brought back as a student to continue Sabio, whatever happens to me will be on their hands for taking advantage of me when I was desperate to improve my life by getting into coding. I've single-handedly brought down two different businesses that violated the law and I hope to make that three if things don't work out.

AVOID, don't make the mistake I did

It's true what others have said in their reviews about Sabio, they directly tell you to lie on your LinkedIn and resume, and instruct you to not tell potential employers that you went to Sabio. Big red flag. Overall the instructors are mediocre, but that doesn't even matter much because most of the course material is in the form of pre-recorded videos of Gregorio attempting to teach code. The contract is also problematic, according to my lawyer - I can't go into detail on this yet though until the case is completed. Currently, my lawyer is building a case against them so they can improve because they aren't open to discussing this type of feedback/criticism.

Making the leap

Making a career change is nerve racking as it is exciting. My biggest concern was will I succeed as a professional in this new field. I’ve learned  everything I need to know, now what?  Where do I start?  What calmed some of my fears was my experience with Sabio. The curriculum is based on in demand skills that employers are seeking right now, which definitely gives you an edge as a candidate. Whether it’s an instructor, alumnus or classmate there is always someone online to answer questions, help you get through a tough spot on a project or give interview pointers. You can self-teach and find resources to learn how to code everywhere. Sabio’s value lies in the support you receive as a student, an alumnus during the job search and as a professional. They are committed to your success. Sabio is more than just a coding bootcamp. It’s a community, a professional network and one of the strongest support networks someone can have when starting a career as a Software Developer.

Best prework!

I had the opportunity of attending two coding boot camps before I was offered a coding job and would like to compare and contrast two coding academies, Sabio and Hack Reactor. Sabio, As per https://www.coursereport.com/schools/sabio is a 5 stars coding academy and Hack Reactor a 4.5.

Sabio is an outstanding place to learn for several reasons, Sabio is small (they do have campuses in LA and Irvine) so you get a one on one approach directly from the founder or from one of the instructors. During the precourse, they provide 3 hours of one on one assitance with an experienced instructor and since the school is small some days you have an instructor for 3 hours providing exclusive assistance with your prework and you also get a promptly response in one of their slack channels.

Their prework is pretty awesome, you solve individual problems that connect to an API (Appliacation Programming Interface) that will let you know immediately when you have solved each specific task. The entire prework was developed and updated by the instructors evidence of their coding knowledge. The prework is organized in components and each components has a video explaining the concept and each component.

Hack Reactor was purchased by galvanize and is a pretty fancy rich school with lots advertizements so their classes are so big that you get the feeling that you are just a number. Their prework is a bit ambigious, you submit it and never hear from the instructors, they don’t have xoom conferences until you pass the prework, so you are really on your own during prework. Their slack channels do provide assistance but most of it come from other students.

Overall, I recommend a small school that can give you attention and is not a beurocratic juggernut.

This program is perfect for a maker/tinkerer type of person like me!

Sabio is amazing! As a person who never graduated from college but always had an intense work ethic, Sabio was the perfect solution for me to get into coding! Throughout my career I’ve found that learning and observing a professional is the best way to understand how to do the job using the best practices. I worked on a project which was using the stack React, Angular, Mongo, Express, and Node. It is a boot-camp like atmosphere but you have to understand that I came in not knowing how to code and almost freaked me out at first jumping into something that I have never done before but yet always wanted to do. The project that me and my cohort worked on prepared me for my current job as a working developer. There are some very unique things to learn like understanding realistic time frames for features, how code is actually written using best practices, code review for source control, agile/scrum project management, and being able to convey and explain features that I created in a professional manner. There were some people in my cohort that had some experience in coding but you should understand that the program is designed to challenge all levels of developer. I valued every hour that I spent there (70 hours per week) and learned as much as I could from our Senior Developer. I recommend  going to a Sabio Info Session and they can explain everything in more detail! As a creative maker/tinkerer person, I understand that knowing how to code is almost like having a super power! You can literally create anything. I highly recommend Sabio and for me, they are the best coding program in Los Angeles hands down!! Thank you so much Gregorio and Liliana!

Go to SABIO

What makes Sabio unique is the community - everybody started in the same place and don't even feel worried if coding is completely new for you. It was for me as well as so many of my classmates which made the whole learning environment so enjoyable and supportive. You can tell Gregorio and Liliana, the co-founders, really care about the community and students based on how readily available they are (even midnight on Slack) and by week 1 they probably know your name. The community is awesome at Sabio and it made me feel so comfortable spending a whole 3 months there learning alongside everybody.

Next, all of the instructors at Sabio have over 10 years of experience. That was what differentiated itself from other bootcamps. Gregorio came from Myspace, Mike came from StackOverflow, just to name a few. The instructors hold so much one on one time during classtime sessions to make sure they address your needs and tailor to your learning seamlessly. I love the interaction between teachers and students at Sabio. It really made the learning worthwhile, and it was amazing learning from teachers who've had so much industry experience. They not only teach you code, but good code and the best practices in the industry.

Go to Sabio!

why sabio

I was recommended to Sabio from a family member and decided to attend an info session which confirmed that this was the bootcamp I wanted to go to. I was at a plateau career wise and wanted to start making the big bucks. My job absolutely sucked. As one of the few females in the tech department, I was not getting the respect and recognition I deserved and was ready to try something new and truly excell in the industry. The teachers at Sabio are absolutely extraordinary, not only do they know what they are doing, but they are true mentors: kind, patient, and passionate. My instructor has made such an impact on my career and I can truly call him my mentor. Think about your favorite teachers in the world, now multiply that by 20 and now you get Sabio instructors. Also getting to be around a bunch of awesome and strong women in tech was refreshing!

Learning to code isn't easy, its not just simple HTML, CSS, and vanilla JS anymore, this is serious programming which can be scary at first. Sabio gives you the tools, guidance, and motivation you need to be a successfull programmer in any environment. You aren't working on silly tic tac toe projects. You code on a real web application, in a real work environment as a team, not as a study group in a class. Anyone can do this if they really want to.

Additionally, they don't just care about how well you are doing in class, but they truly care about what's going on in your personal life and give you support and advice if you need any. Not only are the teachers great, but so is the community. You will continue to get full support well after you have graduated from alumni, teachers, and Liliana and Gregorio themselves.

In terms of the curriculum, I was very impressed. It was structured in a very intelligent way so that you really can succeed. The money is completely worth it, I got a job within 2 weeks after the program finished. The company I am now working for is a completely different stack. Sabio has given me the tools I need to be a successful programmer in any language and I am doing well already!

I increased my salary by 16.67 % and I am making above average out of the program.

If you are really looking for something to change your life, give you the confidence and skills you need to make great money, be successfull, or anything else you want out of your future. This is the place.

Tons of work, but it pays off

Previously, I worked as an accountant, but didn't enjoy the work itself and wanted something more technical and challenging. I had completed some Codecademy courses (which I would recommend to anyone prior to enrolling in a bootcamp - not everyone is going to enjoy coding), and I found myself coding in my free time just for fun. It was time for a career change, and I have no regrets looking back. Bootcamps aren't just a replacement for attending college, they're also a great way to change careers if you went to college for the wrong thing.

Pre-work can be a bit of a pain to attend and isn't the most exciting, but it's important information. It's a totally different format than the bootcamp itself and more of a necessary evil than anything else - it is not representative of what you will do the rest of your time at Sabio. By learning those fundamentals prior to the bootcamp itself, you can hit the ground running and jump straight into the project-based structure of the course.

The bootcamp is structured like an actual workplace where the entire class will work on creating a project together for a local entrepreneur, and I would absolutely say the format of the class put me at an advantage going out into the workplace. You can expect a teacher to be onsite ~9-6 Mon-Fri acting as a lead developer, but you should also expect to stay a couple additional hours to work with classmates.

Sabio's goal is to make a full stack developer out of you, so typically work is divided into verticals. You pick an area that interests you, such as FAQs, and build the front-end, middle-tier, and back-end. Once you complete that, you pick another vertical, and the class builds an entire company in this manner using either Git (or TFS for .NET) to collaborate. Expect to meet with the entrepreneur a few times throughout the course to discuss his / her needs for the software and to give several presentations to other students about what you have been making.

As graduation approaches, you'll start doing practice interviews and whiteboarding code to become more comfortable in interviews. Sabio will occasionally bring in potential employers to campus to interview students. I was the first MEAN cohort, so Sabio didn't have as many connections in the job market for those positions as .NET. They still did a good job of posting job opportunities and recommending employers, but .NET cohorts do have an advantage when looking for jobs. I would expect Sabio to have established a good amount of MEAN stack connections by the end of the year now that the first cohort has graduated and the second MEAN cohort has already begun.

It took me around 4 weeks after graduation to find a job, but it's one I'm very happy with in both salary and job responsibilities. Had I been less picky, I probably could have found one a bit quicker, but you should plan for it to take around a month to find a job.

All in all, I loved my time at Sabio and would still choose them if I did it all over. I feel like I'm a better developer than most people graduating with C.S. degrees, and I'm confident going into the workplace.

TL;DR:

Complete a few Codecademy courses to decide if you enjoy coding before enrolling in ANY bootcamp
Don't form an opinion on Sabio based solely on pre-work
Expect to work 10+ hours a day (with much of it on campus)
You'll make a really cool project as a team that employers love
Everyone will actually work as a full stack developer (if you're in one of the full stack cohorts)
You'll learn practical knowledge and be able to beat C.S. grads in coding tests
Sabio has a great network for finding .NET cohorts jobs and a growing network for MEAN cohorts

You will feel like you've already held a development job by the time you start your first official job

Do it & here's my advice

If you have the dedication to learn how to program, Sabio will provide everything else necessary to make you a hirable tech professional.

Key points regarding my experience and all you need to know about Sabio:

1) I had no technical experience prior to Sabio ... I didn't even know what a div was.

2) The entire process of choosing Sabio, doing the prework, battling through the cohort, job hunting and starting at my new job was about 6 months.

3) Sabio provides help through the entire process.  Gregorio, Lilliana, and all the instructors have your back.  They know what it takes to get hired and make sure you are on track for success.  You really start feeling the Sabio fam vibe when you are enter the second half of your cohort.

4) I felt challenged 100% of the time.  I was always stressed, confused, and baffled by code but that's the name of the game when it comes to programming.

5) I applied for hundreds of jobs and within 3 weeks of ending the cohort I received a full time offer (75k) working as a web developer for a popular television broadcasting company in New York.

The Sabio process works.  If you are ready for a new career in tech, Sabio is a safe bet.

US Army Veteran in Sabio

I found the Sabio program when I was looking for bootcamps that accept the Gi Bill. At the time, there was only 2 schools that accept the Gi Bill. Sabio was a choice I selected because it was located in Los Angeles and it had the best reviews on course report.

Overall Experiece:

The program is designed to get you a job. Sabio teaches you evertyhing you need to learn in order to land your successful first job. You will be challenged in so many ways. You will learn a lot because nothing can replace this fully immersive experience.

Instructors:

The staff treats everyone with respect. All the instuctors bring a unique and positive experience to the campus. Sabio treated us like we were at a birthday party. I mean we had like 4-5 pizza parties throughout the bootcamp. Even our own instructors bought donuts and pizza for all of us.

Curriculum:

The program is designed to be intense. You will be coding over 60+ hours a week, in fact, you might be dreaming of code while you sleep. You cannot get complacent. You need to be dedicated, determined and the desire to win.

Job Assistance:

Sabio will build a perfect resume for you. They also, provide you with industry tips and tricks for job opportunities. They also have a huge network in tech space. For example, I got my first job after finishing Sabio in a week.
