New Haven is the second largest city in Connecticut after Bridgeport, and was the first planned city in the USA, founded in 1638. New Haven's economy has traditionally been in manufacturing, but now more than half of the economy is based in services like education and healthcare. In 2017, New Haven was ranked by a Verizon study as one of the top 10 cities in America for launching tech startups, and top two in New England. Companies that hire tech workers in New Haven and surrounding cities include Frontier Communications Corp, Aetna Health insurance, Cigna Health, United Technologies (jet engine maker), and Charter Communications.
